〈The Face of the Sea〉 was created during a period in which the artist was deeply contemplating direction and identity, using nature as a metaphor for inner states. Here, the sea functions not as a landscape, but as a surface of consciousness — a face reflecting emotions shaped by light, wind, and surrounding conditions. The constantly changing expressions of the sea mirror the artist’s own fluctuating inner states in response to the external world. While earlier works centered primarily on points and linear structures, this painting marks a pivotal transition in which point, line, and plane begin to coexist within a single composition, signaling a shift toward a more expansive pictorial language. Executed in acrylic on silver paper, the work emphasizes visible brushstrokes, variations in paint thickness, and boundaries formed through the material’s rapid drying process, rather than bleeding or diffusion. What appear as dots are accumulations of pigment, pressed and layered to create tactile density — traces of both wave movement and emotional rhythm. This period represents the only phase in which the artist worked with acrylic paint, prior to a material shift informed by growing environmental awareness, including concerns about ecological impact. Originally titled *Self-Portrait*, the painting can be understood less as a depiction of the physical self than as an inward gaze rendered through nature. It stands as a foundational moment from which the artist’s later exploration of sensory and perceptual landscapes unfolds. This work is an early piece by the artist. During the graduation review, it was evaluated by artist Ahn Kyuchul as a work in which the artist’s identity is clearly articulated. The sculptural concerns and artistic attitudes that later developed into an ongoing body of work are already present here.
