《은혜의 파도(Grace Water)》

[ENG SUB] “은혜의 색은 무엇일까?” 이 질문에서 이 작업은 시작되었다. 작가는 ‘은혜’가 반드시 밝고 환한 순간만을 의미하는지 스스로에게 묻는다. 삶의 굴곡과 상처, 침잠의 시간 역시 결국 하나의 흐름 안에서 의미를 가진다면, 그 또한 은혜의 일부가 아닐까. 화면 중앙에서 몸을 일으키는 거대한 파도는 단일한 푸른색이 아니라, 붉은 대지와 초록의 능선, 보라와 남색의 심연을 함께 끌어안고 있다. 수없이 겹쳐 찍힌 짧은 붓질은 파도의 결이자 땅의 단층, 몸 안을 흐르는 근육의 방향처럼 화면 위에 누적된다. 수평선이나 하늘은 의도적으로 비워 두어, 남아 있는 것은 오직 파도의 곡선과 그 안에 쌓인 색의 층위뿐이다. 파도의 중심에는 붉은 기둥처럼 선 색의 균열이 서 있다. 이는 상처이자 통로이며, 서로 다른 세계가 스며들어 섞이는 자리다. 차갑게 번지는 청록과 코발트가 이 붉은 축을 감싸 안으며, 파괴의 순간 같았던 장면을 천천히 수용과 회복의 움직임으로 전환시킨다. 가까이 다가가면 화면은 물의 번짐이라기보다, 방향을 달리하며 쌓인 선들의 집합으로 보인다. 색이 진하게 눌린 자리와 옅게 스며든 자리가 교차하며, 무너졌다가 다시 일어서는 감정의 호흡을 기록한다. 작품 앞에 서면 관람자의 시선은 파도의 방향을 따라 천천히 회전하며, 바다와 대지, 몸의 내부가 하나의 거대한 흐름으로 겹쳐진다. 이때 ‘은혜’라는 단어는 개념이 아니라, 감각으로 다가온다. 이 작품은 이러한 질문과 색의 실험을 바탕으로 완성되었으며, 2009년 제8회 한성백제미술대상전에서 특선으로 선정되었다. · 제8회 한성백제미술대상전 특선 (2009) “What might the color of grace be?” This question marked the beginning of Grace Water. Rather than defining grace as a purely luminous or celebratory moment, the artist reflects on whether periods of darkness, struggle, and inward descent might also belong to its spectrum. At the center of the composition, a monumental wave slowly rises. It is not rendered in a single hue of blue, but carries within it layers of red earth, green ridges, and deep purples and indigos. Short, accumulated brushstrokes follow the direction of the wave, echoing geological strata, muscular movement, and the internal rhythms of the body. The horizon and sky are deliberately omitted, leaving only the curve of the wave and the dense chromatic layers that compose it. A vertical red fissure runs through the core of the wave. It appears at once as a wound and a passage—an opening where different realms converge and intermingle. Cool turquoise and cobalt tones wrap around this axis, gradually transforming what might first seem like a moment of rupture into one of acceptance and recovery. Up close, the surface reveals itself not as flowing water but as a constellation of directional marks. Dense and diluted areas alternate, recording a rhythm of collapse and resurgence. As the viewer’s gaze follows the movement of the wave, sea, land, and the inner body begin to overlap, merging into a single, expansive flow. In this moment, grace is no longer an abstract idea, but a tangible sensation.
